EASTBOURNE is saddling up for the launch of a new cycling festival.
Taking place on the seafront’s Western Lawns from May 21-22, Eastbourne Cycling Festival in association with The Tri Store, is shaping up to be an action-packed weekend with road races, Cyclosportive, time trials, family rides, mountain biking, cappuccino ride, unicycle display, stunt bikes, wattbike challenge, Rollapaluza and much more.
Events will take place along the seafront, at Princes Park and on the South Downs.
Avid cyclists can sign up to take part in events including the Cyclosportive with three routes to choose from: 106 miles, 80 miles, and 50 miles, plus entries are now open for the road races, which will see cyclists taking on laps along the seafront and up to East Dean.
The Festival will include a special Rollapaluza evening at the Afton Hotel on May 21, a contemporary take on an old sport as two cyclists battle it out on a pair of custom made Rollapaluza rollers connected to a huge dial over a simulated 500m distance at speeds of more than 50mph.
Pro cyclists and novices will be able to sign up for the challenge and put their legs to the test as they try to beat the world record of 17.90 seconds.
The Go-Ride Challenge will take place on the Saturday and Sunday of the event offering the chance for a spot of team action with local businesses, schools and colleges invited to take on an obstacle course within the Festival Village to be crowned the most skilful rider, with prizes to be awarded.
And if that all sounds a little too energetic, Bespoke will be leading genteel family rides, while the Bexhill Classic Cycle Group will show off the bikes from years gone by in the Festival Village with ancient antique bikes and vintage clothing in the spirit of Edwardian nostalgia.
