A blueprint for the way forward on the A27 Polegate to Lewes section was agreed at a meeting of the rural communities, convened by MP Norman Baker.
All the parish councils along the route were invited to meet the Polegate and Seaford MP at Selmeston village hall to discuss how the £75m allocated by the government should be spent.
They ruled out both a new dual or single carriageway as proposed by Eastbourne, and also doing nothing.
Instead, they agreed a package of measures designed to improve safety along the alignment of the existing road.
The villages want a safer road with improved access at junctions and better traffic flow.
There is support for junction improvements all along the route, particularly at Wilmington and Selmeston.
Residents would like a safer crossing between the Firle and Glynde junctions for pedestrians and cyclists and a Selmeston bypass behind the Barley Mow. There is support for a single speed limit and related measures. Residents are not in favour of the Folkington Link.
Mr Baker said, “I will now be writing to the Transport Secretary Patrick McLaughlin and to the Highways Agency to pass on the views of the councils.”
David Quysner, chairman of Selmeston Parish, added, “The parishes from Beddingham to the Cophall roundabout are united that improvements in traffic flow, road user safety and local access are long overdue.”
