A giant screen at Eastbourne Rugby Club in Hampden Park will broadcast the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup tournament and the weekend’s games including England v Fiji.

The ceremony is tonight (Friday September 18) and the screen will be in place at the Park Avenue ground for three days over the weekend to coincide with a three day Festival of Sport kicking off today.

The festival is in conjunction with Eastbourne Borough Council and promises plenty of family fun at the free event which also sees Eastbourne’s 1st XV team play their first game of the season.

The rugby club is hosting the event to celebrate local sport in the community and the first game for Eastbourne’s 1st XV team, who play in the London and South East League 3, will be against the Old Dunstonians at 3pm at the club on Saturday September 19.

Over the three-day festival world class live sport including rugby and Formula One will be shown on a big screen and the event will cater for festival-goers of all ages, with a children’s play area, Harvey’s Hop Bar and food including a hog roast, a barbecue and lots more.

Eastbourne Rugby Club chairman, Fraser Brooks said, “The Festival of Sport is a great initiative for celebrating sport in Eastbourne. Eastbourne 1st XV are excited to have support for their first match of the season and a fun event like the Festival of Sport will hopefully encourage young children watching to get into rugby or sport in general.”

The event is free but attendees should be aware the live big screen coverage caters for seating for up to 600 people at a time. Some chairs will be available but visitors are encouraged to bring their own deckchairs, garden seating and blankets for added comfort.

The festival runs 7pm-10pm on Friday 18, 11am-10pm on Saturday 19 and 11am-7pm on Sunday 20 September. Free parking is available at Ratton School and Sussex Downs College.

The festival has been sponsored and supported by Rix & Kay Solicitors LLP, Sanders Property Management, JP South Events, Plummer Parsons Chartered Accountants, Whitemaund, Plus Accounting Chartered Accountants, Cobb PR, Ellis Building Contractors, Neva Consultants, Eastbourne Borough Council and VisitEastbourne.
