A Polegate road will today (November 16) be named after a popular councillor who died earlier this year.
‘Roy Martin Way’ street signs will be unveiled by Mayor of Polegate Cllr Malcolm Cunningham and the town’s MP Norman Baker.
The signs will commemorate the service of Roy and were initiated by the mayor and supported by both the town council and Wealden District Council. The late Cllr Martin’s family are also delighted that a road has been named after their loved one.
Cllr Cunningham said, “My idea was that this private road could be named after Roy as he dedicated so much of his life to the people of Polegate. I was thrilled that the town council supported this and the district voted to enable this to happen. Grateful thanks also to the owners of the land who allowed this to go forward.”
Family members and Roy’s friends are expected to attend alongside councillors from Polegate East Sussex County Council and Wealden District Council. Roy was in a jazz band for many years and his band mates are also expected to attend.
Plaques for both Roy and Gerald Carter, who also passed away this year, will be placed in the council garden in the High Street.
