Hundreds of Rotarians from across Kent and Sussex poured into Eastbourne for their annual conference recently.
The Rotarians chose hotelier Sheikh Abid Gulzar’s Mansion as their headquarters and among the visitors was the District Governor along with MP Stephen Lloyd, who is a Rotarian himself and said he was delighted the organisation had chosen Eastbourne for their annual gathering.
Mr Lloyd said, “I am proud to be a Rotarian and although I am a member of Eastbourne Rotary AM, I am a keen supporter of Rotary across the town.
“AM is easier for me because they meet at 7am on a Friday which is a time when there is less likely to be clashes in my hectic diary.
“I am not able to be there weekly because I am so busy working across the constituency, but I can assure everyone that Rotary is a very worthwhile and significant organisation worldwide.
“I was delighted to pop into the Mansion to congratulate Mr Gulzar on hosting the conference.
“Conferences are vital for our economy, both for hotels and guest houses and for the money they spend while they are here for three days.”
Mr Gulzar said, “I have been a strong supporter of Rotary for many years in Eastbourne. It is amazing that the town has five thriving Rotary clubs, one meeting for breakfast, one for lunch, and three in the evening. We are delighted to host Eastbourne Rotary Club at the Chatsworth every Monday lunchtime, and Eastbourne Sovereign every Thursday evening, plus we have very close links with Eastbourne AM. In September we worked with Eastbourne AM to raise £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support on the annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event. We were delighted the district team chose Lion Hotels to host them for the weekend. I was pleased to meet so many of them over the three days.”
