DIABETES checks were given to dozens of people in Eastbourne – including the town’s mayor Mike Thompson.

A nationwide roadshow rolled into town last week for two days of testing in an effort to diagnose some of the estimated thousands of people in the area who are suffering from type two diabetes without knowing about it.

Experts believe as many as 8,200 people in East Sussex are unaware they have diabetes and the roadshow also helped to highlight some of the leading risk factors which could indicate someone could develop the disease later in life.

Jill Steaton, of Diabetes UK, said, “Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today.”

Locals can ask their GP for advice on diabetes.
