THE RNLI launched a full-scale search last night after police found clothing near Eastbourne’s Sovereign Centre.
The alarm was raised shortly before 9pm on Saturday evening. Fearful that a person was in the water Dover Coastguard requested the launch of both RNLI lifeboats to search the area.
The volunteer crews searched an area between Eastbourne pier and Langney Point for three hours in testing sea conditions with a two metre swell and strong winds. With nothing found, the search was abandoned shortly before midnight and the crews returned to station.
Earlier in the day, Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat was launched to rescue a windsurfer who was in difficulties off the popular Spray Watersports beach. The windsurfer was quickly recovered and returned to shore.
