Review: Fantastic Mr Fox at Cineworld
WHAT do you get if you combine a dark fairy-tale by Roald Dahl, the quirkiness of director Wes Anderson and the Hollywood voice of George Clooney?
Luckily, what could have turned into a complete mish-mash of styles is, in fact, a gloriously charming film packed full of humour and energy.
The eponymous fox, voiced by Clooney, is so cocky that despite promising his wife (Meryl Streep) and young cub (Jason Schwartzman, who packs plenty of dry humour and teenage desperation into his voiceover) that he'll lead a quiet life and quit stealing chickens, reneges on his vow once the family move into an oak tree.
From his tree he can see into three farms, owned by farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean, and his wild nature surfaces.....
But after poaching chickens, geese and even some cider, Mr Fox becomes the target of the furious farmers, who team up to eradicate him and his family.
Meanwhile, the cub, Ash, is dealing with his own problem – his cousin Kristofferson, who is popular, kind and super athletic, has come to stay.
Kristofferson is not only instantly popular with Ash's classmates, he also impresses Mr Fox, to Ash's fury.
Apparently Anderson was almost irritatingly fastidious with his direction of the stop-motion animation (which is a particularly time-consuming and tricky process), but the final product is well worth his efforts.
The foxes are packed full of character and the whole film has a lovely autumnal glow about it.
It's a shame that the film has succumbed to that Hollywood cliche of the goodies being American and the baddies being Brits – and the pace may be a little too measured for some of the smaller members of the audience – but otherwise Fantastic Mr Fox is an absolute treat.
