Local residents are being invited to join free classes at Sussex Downs College.

Starting this autumn, the classes are for adults wishing to improve their English and maths skills for day-to-day life, increase their job prospects, gain confidence, learn new skills or as a stepping stone to a GCSE course. Classes are free of charge and will be held at the College’s Eastbourne and Newhaven campuses.

Angela Wooller, curriculum leader for adult maths and English at Sussex Downs College, said, “If you want to improve your English and maths skills to use in everyday situations such as helping your children or grandchildren with their homework, adding up in the supermarket, or to give you the push you need to apply for that promotion, then our free classes are an ideal way to help you increase your confidence and skills.

“You can study at your own pace and at a level that’s right for you, in relaxed classes with friendly tutors. Courses can even lead to recognised qualifications.”

Enrolment sessions for these classes are taking place at the College’s Eastbourne campus today (Tuesday) from 5pm – 8pm and at the Newhaven campus on September 11 from 4pm – 8pm. To book your place, or arrange another time to enrol, call 01323 637241 for Eastbourne, or 01273 511400 for Newhaven.

The College is also running English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for people who need English for work, citizenship, study and everyday life. Classes are small and friendly and will focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

The ESOL classes are free for those in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance and in most cases you do not have to pay if you are in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance.

Enrolment sessions for ESOL at the Eastbourne campus are taking place on Tuesday 10 September from 10am-noon and 5pm-7pm; and September 12 from 1-3pm. Enrolment sessions for ESOL at the Newhaven campus are taking place on Tuesday 3 September from 10am-noon, and September 11 from 5pm-7pm.
