Tribute has been paid to a ‘brave’ and well-known former hotelier who passed away this month following a long battle with cancer.

Ken Sayers owned the West Rocks Hotel in Grand Parade for 35 years with wife Ulla and the couple welcomed back many regular customers during their time there.

The father-of-two, who ran the Park View Hotel in the town with Ulla prior to them taking over the West Rocks Hotel, was born in the town and married Ulla in 1966. They went on to have two daughters. He retired in 2002, partly due to illness.

The 75-year-old, who also leaves behind five grandchildren, was diagnosed with cancer in 1998 and despite being treated for the disease, it returned and spread to his liver. Mr Sayers died on February 2 at his Old Town home.

Mrs Sayers, who said her husband was very brave, added, “He had a lot of staff that stayed with him for many years at the West Rocks Hotel. We had a lot of regular customers at both hotels. We found it very hard work but enjoyed it, It becomes very much a lifestyle.

“Ken was very calm, kind and patient.

“Everyone was amazed at how positive he was.”

His funeral will take place on February 21 at 1pm at Eastbourne Crematorium.
