A popular family restaurant has been badly damaged following a blaze that broke out in Polegate this (Monday) afternoon.

Fire crews from Eastbourne and Hailsham raced to The Old Polegate Station after calls came in at 2.30pm to reports of smoke billowing from the building.

Liam Thompson was enjoying a drink at The Junction Tavern with friends opposite the scene in Station Road.

He went to see if anyone was inside the building, adding, “We went around the back, we shouted, no one responded but we could hear the crackling, it was really burning, so we came back and waited this side.”

The business is closed on a Monday and borough commander for Eastbourne Dave Sheppard said no-one was inside the property.

He said the fire had been quite severe inside the pub and that it had taken 30 minutes to get the blazeunder control and put it out.

He said a fire investigation officer would be attending the scene to look at the cause of the fire, adding that it was most likely accidental but that could not be confirmed at this stage.

A full report will be in the Gazette tomorrow (Tuesday).
