Any plans to widen the Exceat Bridge near Seaford to two-way traffic are ‘way off’.

The A259 crosses the River Cuckmere at the bridge, which is due for repairs to its foundations and abutments.

At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (September 22), Rupert Clubb, director for communities, economy and transport, said that the route would need to remain open when any repairs took place.

He said: “There are opportunities to improve capacity but I would say it’s a long way off. The key thing is for us is ensuring the Exceat Bridge stays up.”

A budget of £500,000 for the maintenance works was set aside by the county council.

A petition was launched earlier this year for traffic lights on the bridge to improve traffic flow and has already gained 842 signatures.

Alan Simonds, of Links Close, Seaford, who set up the petition, argued that traffic lights would be the most cost-effective solution rather than widening the existing bridge or building a second.
