A charity has submitted a planning application to turn the telephone box by Eastbourne Pier into a retail kiosk selling cold drinks, coffee and ice creams.
Thinking Outside The Box sent the proposal to Eastbourne Borough Council with the aim of transforming the phone booth to the left of the pier entrance into a mini shop, with all the proceeds going to charitable causes.
The plans do not include any changes to the size or layout of the phone box. Instead, they plan to restore it to its former glory with a fresh lick of bright red paint. No external paraphernalia will be added to the site either.
Inside the phone box there will be a fully self-contained modular kiosk unit, which can be moved in and out manually within minutes, ensuring no stock or cash will be left in the phone boxes overnight.
Thinking Outside The Box has already transformed many phone boxes in Brighton and Plymouth, with great success. The charity’s planning application states, “The aim of this proposal is to redefine their usage to suit modern day needs and requirements without compromising their external appearance on the street scene. Careful consideration has been given to update the use of the phone boxes but at the same time maintain their character.”
