PLANS for a new supermarket in Eastbourne have been supported by local residents, according to planners.

Although there was only a small turnout to see drawings of the plans, Planning Potential – a town planning consultancy firm involved with the application – said residents were behind Morrisons moving to the site in Arkwright Road in Hampden Park.

A spokesperson for the consultancy said, “We were very pleased with feedback. There were a couple of points of clarification, but, without exception, everyone was in support and asking when the store would be opening.”

The firm says it could create up to 300 jobs.

But Samantha Chapman, chair of a group of Hampden Park traders, said the move could spell trouble for independent businesses in the area.
