A Seaford dog and his proud owner have come top of the class at Crufts.

Finch, a three-year-old Australian shepherd, along with Pete Catt from Seaford, won the Kennel Club Large Novice ABC (Anything But Collies) Agility competition at the world famous dog show.

Sponsored by Joint Aid for Dogs, the official sponsor of the Kennel Club Olympia Agility Stakes, the competition took place at Crufts for the very first time this year.

Pete and Finch, whose Kennel Club name is Bachero Redwood Crazy Finch, won after competing in both jumping and agility, as they had the fewest combined faults in the fastest combined time, calculated over the two rounds of the final.

The final saw large dogs (Grades one to five) other than border collies and working sheepdogs competing to win. All 10 finalists had qualified at the semi-finals at Discover Dogs in November 2012.

Both Pete and his wife Denise compete in agility and train together twice a week.

Pete, an experienced dog agility handler for more than 25 years, said, “I’m chuffed for Finch – he was brilliant. It’s our first time winning at Crufts and it was the icing on the cake of a great day.”

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said, “The Large Novice ABC agility took place at Crufts for the first time and the atmosphere was electric in the ring.

“We would like to congratulate Finch and Pete. He is such a lovely dog that clearly loves competing and has a great relationship with his handler.”
