Police treating large Eastbourne van fire as arson

Police investigating a large fire in an Eastbourne street are treating it as suspected arson, a spokesman has confirmed.

The incident happened in Etchingham Road, Eastbourne, at 4am on Thursday (July 2).

On Monday (July 6), a spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police and firefighters responded to a report of a van on fire in Etchingham Road, Eastbourne, around 4.18am on Thursday 2 July.

“The fire was extinguished and the incident is being treated as a suspected arson.”

Anyone with any information has been asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 188 of 02/07.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire said: "At 04:07, we were called to attend Etchingham Road, Eastbourne following reports of a vehicle fire.

"Eastbourne firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one jet hose to extinguish a large van fire.

"The incident was left with Sussex Police and Highways."

Pictures from the scene showed firefighters tackling the blaze outside residential properties.

Police were also called to the scene.
