People Matter is an Eastbourne based charity with outreach in Hailsham, which helps some 1,500 local job seekers each year by equipping them for employment.
The charity has qualified and experienced advisers who help clients to prepare CVs, action plans, identify transferable skills and a host of other services, including help with computer skills, online job search and applications.
People Matter spend an average of three hours with each client and all services are provided free, although they are costly to provide. It relies on financial support from businesses, the local community and grants.
It provides help with recruitment needs of local businesses, through its extensive database of job seekers with very diverse skills and backgrounds.
The help provided is a mix or practical, social and emotional support.
The charity has just four paid employees and some 30 volunteers, some of whom are also job seekers.
Brian, who was helped by the charity, said, “I moved to Eastbourne and was homeless and the Job Centre told me about People Matter because I didn’t have a CV or anything.
Brian now works for Marks and Spencer and is training to be a manager.
He added, “With People Matter’s help I have gone from being homeless to a great job for the last two years at Marks and Spencer with prospects to be a manager.
“Last week I ran the whole food section for a day. How about that.
“I always recommend them to anyone. People Matter has changed my life. “
