Calling all budding artists and photographers – the Friends of Old Town Rec group is inviting entries for its first Art and Photography Competition.

Not surprisingly, the theme is Old Town Rec. But the Friends don’t just want to see general views of the Rec. Instead they want entrants to be imaginative and creative – and even downright wacky.

Entrants are being invited to explore different colours or textures, natural and man-made, in the Rec, or get down and look closely at what’s growing on the ground; or up in the trees.

George Collier from the group said, “Can you capture an image of birds or insects in the Rec? Or people in the Rec walking their dogs, jogging, resting on a park bench, having a family picnic, playing soccer or enjoying the play area. Open your mind, use your imagination – and yours might be a winning entry.”

There are three classes: under 11 years; 11 to 16; and aged 16 upwards.

Paintings and drawings can use any medium - watercolours, oils, crayon, pencil etc and photographs can be in colour or black and white. The maximum size for entries is A4.

Entries will be displayed at the Old Town Summer Fete, which will be held in the Rec from 2-5pm on Saturday July 20.

Entrants are being advised to write their name, address and age on a label on the reverse of their entry and make sure that it is handed in at the Friends of Old Town Rec stand by 2.30pm on the day of the fete.

The competition will be judged and the winners announced during the afternoon.

Well-known Eastbourne artist Nigel Greaves has agreed to judge the competition and will exhibit the winning entries in each class at Nigel Greaves Gallery, Grand Hotel Buildings in Compton Street.
