A group of friends from Hailsham are currently overseas taking part in a banger rally to raise funds for a toddler born with severe brain damage.

Neil Schulz, Duncan Brown, Simon Miller, Steve Hawkins and Roger Head have been joined by ‘Mini Dave’ from London for the fundraiser, which sees them travel from Saint-Quentin in France to Monte Carlo. The three day challenge, which covers 1,500 miles, will be completed in two rusty Jaguars.

Father-of-three Neil and the team will be raising funds for a little girl called Lyra through the Tree of Hope Children’s Charity. Lyra was born with congenital cytomegalovirus, hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenia and severe brain damage. So far the pals have raised more than £2,260 on their Just Giving site but are hoping more people will support the cause.

The fundraiser came about to mark Neil and Duncan’s 40th birthdays and they decided to take part in the rally to raise funds for little Lyra, who is a relative of Duncan’s partner. The event will see them set off from Saint-Quentin in France today (Friday) through parts of Italy and Switzerland, before ending up in Monte Carlo on Sunday.
