Hailsham residents will soon be able to enjoy a new £10,000 outdoor gym.
The facility will be based at Western Road Recreation Ground thanks to funding a grant from the Awards For All National Lottery scheme.
The proposal to build an outdoor gym came from Hailsham Youth Council last summer and was formally agreed by the Town Council in November.
Since then, the Youth Council has organised a small working party to look at the design of the proposed facility, carry out a community survey on the benefits of installing an outdoor gym, and seek funding opportunities available.
Hailsham Youth Council Mark Joyes said, “The news that our funding bid has been successful is fantastic news for Hailsham.
“We believe the outdoor gym will be a wonderful facility for people to use, both young and old. It could also help to improve relations and perceptions between younger and older people, and encourage them to engage more frequently with one another.”
The equipment will be specially designed to suit all ages and abilities and could include an air skier, cross country skier, double rower, seated leg press and a push up station, which would be modelled similar to a playground.
Town Mayor Councillor Jeff Bentley-Astor praised the Youth Council for their dedication to the project so far, and their determination to improve their local area.
He said, “I would like to thank Youth Council members for their hard work in terms of securing the funding from the Awards For All scheme, and everyone else who supported them in this bid.
“Hailsham Town Council will continue to support the project and welcomes anything that encourages health and fitness amongst residents in our town.
The equipment will be suitable for most ages and would offer an outdoor fitness facility for people with disabilities and anyone who would rather not attend a gym.
Regular updates about the progress of the outdoor gym facility will be posted on the Youth Council’s website: www.hailshamyc.org.
