Wedding and events manager at The Grand Hotel Eastbourne, Lindsay Hawley, gives her advice on preparing for the perfect romantic proposal or a stunning winter wedding this Christmas
The festive period is, in my opinion, one of the most enchanting times of the year. Twinkling lights adorn the interiors and exteriors of nearly everywhere you go, delightful seasonal food is available in abundance and with December being the most popular month to propose, love is most certainly in the air.
So how do you prepare for a romantic proposal at Christmas and why is a winter wedding still a firm favourite among many happy couples?
The key to a special and romantic proposal is all in the planning. Once you have made the big decision to get down on one knee, think about the type of celebration you would like to create for both you and your future spouse and start writing your ideas down.
You may like to tap in to a shared memory by revisiting a place you first met or recreating an amazing meal you have both enjoyed. If you are choosing a special place to propose ensure you give them plenty of notice of your intentions. Any good venue will always be happy to help with the details. Here at The Grand Hotel we are very used to catering to special requests from guests so liaising closely with the venue can make a huge difference to making the occasion extra special. For example, by arranging to have Champagne waiting on ice at the key moment or asking the chef to pipe a “Will you marry me?” message onto a dessert plate.
If you would prefer to remain in the comfort of your own home, some fantastic festive ideas include using fairy lights to spell out your proposal or hiding the engagement ring inside a stocking as a wonderful surprise on Christmas Day morning. Adding special touches like a roaring log fire, mistletoe or candles with Champagne and strawberries will add to the romance.
Winter weddings here at The Grand Hotel have long been a favourite amongst happy couples looking to tie the knot and it is easy to see why.
What could be more striking than a sparkling Christmas tree gracing your wedding venue or the stunning backdrop of a snow covered landscape? Christmas provides the perfect setting for a beautifully romantic wedding day and festive foliage will create stunning decorative displays and centre pieces.
A winter wedding breakfast can be inspired by delicious seasonal favourites too. There are endless options ranging from the classic turkey complete with all the trimmings to a festive twist on a traditional afternoon tea featuring miniature stollen and chocolate yule log. Mulled wine or a Christmas themed cocktail are also great alternatives for reception drinks.
If you are planning on giving your guests wedding favours some great ideas include pretty snow globes, personalised tree ornaments or seasonally inspired gingerbread shapes.
Don’t feel that it is necessary to rush off straight after the wedding. Enjoying your first night in a glorious suite will be both relaxing and allow you to reflect on your special day. The Grand Hotel’s first night package, which includes rose petals and a late check out the following day, is extremely popular with couples tying the knot all year round. Of course, winter is also a great excuse to enjoy some winter sun and if you choose your dates well, there are some fantastic offers to be found on holidays abroad.
