I don’t really do animals, especially the canine variety which are frequently referred to in our house as four legged-poo machines. Despite insistent calls from the Little Treasures to get a dog, I have resisted and our only venture into keeping pets has been two hamsters who escaped more times than Houdini. That said, this week’s column is virtually all about dogs. Firstly we have the story of poor Millie the pup who needs a £1,000 scan so she can get a proper diagnosis and treatment for her illness and I don’t doubt dog lovers will dig deep. Secondly, Westie owner Peter Benthom tells me there are no dog waste bins at the Seven Sisters Country Park apart from two close to the car park entrance that are so well hidden many dog walkers clearly give up the search and leave their filled bags by the entrance. Mind you, at least they are clearing up their pets but that’s not the point. And last but not least, and the daftest idea to come out of the powers that be at Eastbourne Borough Council for a few weeks, is the decision to scrap the post of dog warden. Apparently the work currently undertaken by the dog warden will be taken up by a team of nine “neighbourhood advisors” who, when they are not dealing with disputes between neighbours, graffiti, anti social behaviour etc etc, will deal with dog fouling enforcement. If the council expects us to believe that pile of, erm, rubbish they must be barking.

While the majority of people talk in kilos I still refer to things in old money like pounds and ounces. And earlier this month an old friend who, while nursing a Mojito cocktail and his swollen ankles on a beach in Thailand, pointed out that something is amiss with signs down at the tip in St Philip’s Avenue and as they are in metric not in imperial they contravene the Road Traffic Act. And he’s right. The signs should say 55 yards NOT 50 metres and someone needs to realise we’re not living in France, take them down and erect them correctly...
