Herald Opinion: Another blow for Eastbourne seafront

WHAT a sad story this week about the threatened closure of Eastbourne’s fishermen’s club. Once seen as amongst the most thriving social clubs in the town, it now finds bar takings and membership shrinking, and its restaurant closed.

The signs look grim for a club that has been part of the seafront scenery for more than 70 years. Its demise would be another blow to an area still smarting from the closure of Treasure Island.

WHO would believe it? Eastbourne topping a Sussex league for a sexual disease, with the highest number of chlamydia infections for 15-24 olds.

The advice to the young is clear. Please use the texts and screening facilities that are available. Getting that message across will be harder than ever with the government’s national sexual health strategy of the past decade ending shortly.
