A GIANT Olympic party is being held at Princes Park to mark the occasion on Tuesday– complete with a big screen live broadcast following the torch as it wings its way around town.
Eastbourne Borough Council has organised a free fun day for the thousands of people expected to take to the streets to watch the relay and is promising the town one of its biggest parties in years.
A massive screen will show live footage of the torch arrival as it approaches Eastbourne, followed by the journey of the 18 torchbearers passing through the town from 3.18pm onwards. The torch relay will also pass the festivities in Princes Park before waving goodbye to Eastbourne as it continues on to Pevensey Bay with live footage of the onward journey on screen.
And as well as a host of Olympic themed fun there will be live music and a stash of sporting activities for people to try out, including football, athletics, table tennis, basketball and many more. Younger revellers can also take part in a range of activities for children, organised by Eastbourne’s sports centres and the town’s play ranger.
The fun is due to get underway at 11am and continue throughout the day, with a live roadshow, music from local bands and enough catering stalls to feed an army.
Children are being encouraged to make their own flame-themed shakers, maracas, headdresses and hats with how to guides available online at www.visiteastbourne.com.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s head of tourism Councillor Neil Stanley said, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness at first hand the most spectacular event Britain will see for generations.
“This will be a day to remember and something to tell your kids, grandchildren and even great grandchildren.”
