Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare has seen a surge in unwanted animals being handed over in the run-up to Christmas.

On Monday December 17 alone, 10 dogs were taken in by Raystede, based at Ringmer. A litter of five Jack Russell puppies and five adult dogs came from local dog wardens.

Nigel Mason, Raystede’s chief executive, said, “It’s really important that people understand the responsibility of owning a dog is for life.

“At Christmas in particular, too many dogs are treated as an extra burden and callously thrown out on the street.

“We will make sure these dogs are well looked after and kept warm and well fed over Christmas and until they find a new and loving home, but our resources are already stretched.

“We will have over 1,500 animals in our care over the holiday period.

“I’m asking anyone who feels they can help to give what they can to our Rumbly Tums appeal, either online at www.raystede.org/rumblytums or by texting FEED06 £2/£6/£10 to 70070 telephone donations can be made by calling 01825 840747.

“It really will make a huge difference.”
