BBC Sussex will play host to the BBC World War One At Home Live Event at the Eastbourne International Airshow on Saturday and Sunday August 16 and 17.

The special event will reflect the dramatic impact the war had on families and communities across Sussex, and help visitors to explore their own relatives’ links to the war.

The BBC World War One At Home Live Event is family-friendly and includes hands-on activities, performances and interactive sessions designed to appeal to everyone aged from eight to 80. The events bring to life the World War One At Home stories that listeners will have heard on their BBC Local Radio stations across the country this year.

Visitors will be able to make their own ID permits and meet experts from Imperial War Museums to find out more about Lives of the First World War and how they can help piece together their First World War connections and create a permanent digital memorial.

Our aim is to give people a deeper insight into life on the Home Front 100 years ago and to enable them to find out more about their own families’ involvement.

We’ll have plenty of activities on offer for the local community, including the chance to learn a vital Home Front skill and send a wartime message using semaphore code with the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. Visitors will also be able to discover how austerity during the war years affected Home Life in Sussex, from shopping to homewares.

There will be the opportunity to learn about life in Eastbourne’s Summerdown Camp, the only WW1 rehabilitation camp in Sussex and discover how crafts like metal-work helped soldiers to recover from battlefield injuries. Visitors will even be able to try their hand at a Summerdown pastime and make a sweetheart badge with Eastbourne Heritage Service.

The BBC World War One At Home Live Event at the Eastbourne International Airshow is free of charge. Please visit www.bbc.co.uk/ww1 for further details.

World War One At Home is an ambitious project by BBC English Regions which this year is featuring 1,400 stories on BBC Local Radio and online about life on the Home Front.

The World War One At Home Live Events is a partnership between BBC Learning and BBC English Regions. The BBC also continues its partnership with Imperial War Museums (IWM) during the Centenary commemorations and IWM’s Lives of the First World War will be an integral part of the tour.
