A FORMER bike shop in Polegate is set to have a new lease of life as a convenience store with an off licence.
Plans to turn the former Kontour Cycles shop in Millfields, Hailsham Road, into a corner shop were given the go ahead by Wealden councillors at the Civic Community Hall recently.
The green light and new premises license was given despite protests from local residents and a petition presented to councillors signed by 230 shopkeepers and neighbours who said they were concerned the sale of alcohol would attract young people to the area and see an increase in anti social behaviour, encourage under age drinking and lead to more crime.
The application was to be able to sell alcohol from 6am-11pm.
At the packed public meeting councillors said they had taken on board all the residents’ concerns but would grant the application.
They agreed though for the sale of alcohol to be limited to between 8am-10pm and said the licence holder must ensure any people loitering outside the premises disperse quickly and do not congregate.
