A NEW group to look after Manor Gardens may be set up later this month.
The first meeting of the Friends of Manor Gardens will be held in the Lamb Inn in Old Town on Tuesday September 20 from 6pm onwards.
The gardens, next to Gildredge Park, have hit the headlines recently after Eastbourne Borough Council agreed to place a skate park within its boundary.
Concerned visitors to the gardens also say it is regularly hit by vandals and needs protecting as well as regenerating.
Mary Corran, who lives in nearby Park Close, is behind the moves to set up a group.
She said, “Let us, for the moment, forget the proposed skate park. One issue raised during the discussions about this park has been the state of Manor Gardens.
“The rose gardens have been vandalised. The Hermitage needs help. Vandals regularly damage bushes, trees, anything that gives pleasure. Thus Manor Gardens needs Friends.
“Jim Roberts, who owns the Lamb Inn, has generously offered an upstairs meeting room to potential members and a representative from Parks and Gardens is attending and he will be able to let us know in what ways we can help.
“We want people to please come along. Everyone is welcome, bring ideas, bring their own thoughts about help we can offer.
“It could be fundraising and there are entertainments we could hold in Manor Gardens such as Easter and Christmas festivities.
“Manor Gardens is very special to Eastbourne and enjoyed by residents of all ages. We need to take part in the regeneration of this lovely space.”
