New landlord's vision for The George

A POPULAR Hailsham pub which closed more than five months ago is to reopen its doors.

Previous landlords Geoff and Sheila Baker pulled the plug on The George on June 23 as they said plummeting sales left the business untenable.

But new owner Steve McMorrow, who clinched the deal to buy the pub's lease from the administrators last week, says he wants to relaunch it as a community-focused pub in time for Christmas.

The George will be open from tomorrow — with its official relaunch on December 19.

Mr McMorrow said, "We want it to be a community pub for everyone.

"We would like families to bring children along, we will be doing meal deals for senior citizens and providing meals for people going to the Pavilion.

"We also want to have a carvery here by the New Year because there isn't one in Hailsham."

Mr McMorrow also dismissed fears that the recent slump in the pub industry meant there was no opportunity for locals to flourish.

He said, "The opportunity is there within Hailsham providing we cater for everyone in the town.

"Hailsham needs a community pub. There are certain aspects of each pub that are good but there's no single one that caters for everyone.

"We will also be sourcing vegetables and meat locally.

"We need the support of the community but we need to provide a facility the community will want to come to."

He added he also wanted the bulk of his new staff intake to be from Hailsham and surrounding areas and said he had more than 100 phone calls about job opportunities since an advert went up outside the pub.
