A veteran charity campaigner living with multiple sclerosis is climbing the 02 arena in London in her wheelchair to raise funds for a cause very dear to her heart.

Shirley McCall, 81, from Hampden Park, Eastbourne, will attempt the 52 metre climb on September 15, and she is determined to achieve the feat.

She is raising funds for SASBAH - the Sussex Association for spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

She was a nurse until she was diagnosed with MS in 1973 aged 49.

She said, “I have known SASBAH for more than 40 years due to my long friendship with a lovely lady called Jean Arnold who had spina bifida. Sadly Jean passed away a few years ago.

“I have continued to support the work of SASBAH and especially through my enthusiasm for raising awareness and funds for good causes.

“SASBAH provides so many great support services to so many local people with various disabilities. I was honoured to be asked to become an ambassador last year during their 50th anniversary and as part of my efforts I am looking to raise as much money as I can for this worthy cause.

“Despite my own health I am sure I can complete this challenge to help others. Recently I have been involved in a serious accident myself and I am currently recovering. I need to use this challenge as a focus and purpose to get well before September.’

Shirley is now the chair of the Disability Involvement Group with Eastbourne Borough Council, and also vice-chair of Eastbourne Homes Hampden Park Panel.

She has previously been chair of the local MS Society, and chair of the Hailsham and dDstrict Crossroads Club. She has supported SASBAH for 45 years.

Rom Sanglaji, CEO of Sasbah, said that Shirley is an amazing lady.

He said, “I have nothing but admiration for her.

“We all love her dearly and what she is attempting to do is truly remarkable.

“She has been so supportive of our charity and we are truly grateful to Shirley for all she does.”
