EASTBOURNE MP Stephen Lloyd visited the London headquarters of City & Guilds ahead of this week’s National Apprenticeship Week.

Mr Lloyd spoke to the director general Chris Jones and policy director Judith Norrington.

On the agenda was how Mr Lloyd can work with the leading vocational education organisation to support jobs and growth through skills development.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week he will be hosting a reception in Parliament, sponsored by City & Guilds and Business in the Community, to bring together politicians, employers and their apprentices to address how even more apprenticeship places can be created.

The MP first met with City & Guilds in November of last year with the aim of improving apprenticeships to meet the needs of businesses and learners following his successful 100 apprenticeships in 100 days campaign in Eastbourne and Willingdon.

Working with local businesses and training providers 181 apprenticeships were created in just 100 days, and City & Guilds were keen find out about Eastbourne’s success so other towns are able to repeat it.

Last year, City & Guilds also launched its Million Extra campaign to support the delivery of a million apprenticeship places by 2013 and during National Apprenticeship Week this year they are launching a range of materials to support businesses employing new apprentices.

Mr Lloyd said, “To me, it’s all about jobs, so it was great to meet the City & Guilds team and to hear about the work they are doing to support businesses and learners to achieve their ambitions.

“Vocational skills are vital to our economy and I am absolutely determined to do all I can in Parliament to ensure opportunities for new apprentices continue to grow, and their quality becomes second to none.”

Mr Jones said, “It was a pleasure to host Stephen at our offices this morning and we’re delighted that he has agreed to be a Champion for City & Guilds and the vocational agenda in Parliament.

“We hope the Apprenticeship Week Reception with Stephen next week will formally mark the start of a relationship that raises the profile and status of vocational education in Westminster.”
