Eastbourne and Willingdon MP Caroline Ansell is urging Eastbourne to become the eastern Gateway Town to the South Downs National Park.

The South Downs Way runs from Winchester in the West to Eastbourne in the East – and Mrs Ansell has joined forces with Winchester MP Steve Brine to get the initiative off the ground.

Both are pushing for the label to be given to their respective areas.

“This idea has been considered in Eastbourne for some time and I think that the borough council now has to really look at getting this branding ready to use,” she said.

“It’s my view that becoming a Gateway Town will enhance Eastbourne’s identity and drive tourism, retail and many other businesses and that is good news for employment and the standing of Eastbourne.”

Mrs Ansell has also visited Winchester, which has invested heavily in tourism in recent years and has reaped the benefits with increased visitor numbers, more hotels built and greater High Street footfall.
