Eastbourne’s mayor and MP are firing up to take part in a charity fundraiser.

The Firewalk is the first event of its kind to take part in the town that is organised by a member of the public.

Jan Mirisola-Jones, whose daughter has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, has already enlisted a number of people to take part in the event on October 19 at St Andrew’s Prep School.

Among them will be Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd and Eastbourne mayor Councillor Mike Thompson who will be rolling up their trousers and kicking off their shoes in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Mr Lloyd said, “I get the distinct impression my diary manager dislikes me. First he had me jumping out of a plane and now – walking over hot coals!

“I am very pleased though, to be supporting Jan in raising money for such an excellent cause.

“This will be an unusual way of raising both funds for the charity and also awareness of what is a life-long disease.”

Cllr Thompson said, “I will not be defeated as things hot up.

“This is for a very good cause and hopefully we will raise a good amount towards researching more about Diabetes Type 1.”

Jan, who is looking for more volunteers to take part in the event, said, “Nearly 18 months ago my 13-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and as a parent of a child with this condition, I wanted to do all I could to raise money and awareness for finding a cure for this life-threatening life-long disease.

“The idea of walking across hot coals may seem scary at first but it’s exciting fun that really won’t injure you.”

Jan was also inspired to organise the Eastbourne fundraiser after taking part in a similar event with her daughter in Wiltshire earlier this year.
