Milligan memoirs marching here

SPIKE Milligan's war memoirs have been lovingly adapted for the stage in Adolf Hitler: My Part In His Downfall which comes to the Devonshire Park Theatre from October 12-17.

A hugely talented cast of seven actor-musicians will take you on a journey through Milligan's celebrated memoirs.

This odyssey through the Second World War starts with his training in Bexhill-on-Sea in the Royal Artillery and through the North African and Italian campaigns, which massively affected the young Spike.

Audiences are transported to an Ensa concert in this at times anarchic, moving and highly comic new adaptation.

The acclaimed production features the jazz music that Milligan loved, along with contemporary tunes including Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me), Ain't Misbehavin' and a Glenn Miller medley.

This show brings to life the realities of life as a gunner: the characters, the humour, the music and the comradeship that these brave men experienced.

Using Milligan's own words, the story is told through a joyous fusion of comedy, jazz, song and dance – showing how humour, music and camaraderie enabled a hapless and disparate bunch of young men to prevail against the might of the Nazis.

Milligan often made visits to the Devonshire and insisted on sitting in a box – even though the view from these seats means you miss half the stage.

Tickets cost from 13.50-19.50. Call 412000.
