Meads WI - May meeting report

PRESIDENT Lorna Dakin welcomed a smaller number of members than usual to the May Meeting of Meads WI following immediately after the bank holiday.

She thanked members for the cards and good wishes she had received during her recent sudden stay in hospital. The institute's tablecloth had been accepted for display at Michelham Priory for the 90th Anniversary Picnic and a number of tickets were sold for this celebration event.

The institute's entry for the 'One Step Further' booklet of local walks to be produced by the Federation had been accepted. Names were being taken for the Summer Tea at The Ship on August 11.

Details were given of a number of Federation events, including opportunities to try croquet and take part in a golf tournament – a sure sign that summer is here.

Jenni Andrews and Ali Miller then gave a comprehensive presentation on the resolution to be presented at the Federation's annual meeting at the Albert Hall in June concerning the urgent need for much greater funding into research to halt the drastic decline in the bee population.

After hearing of the extreme problems this will cause to agriculture in a very short time, and the derisory sum contributed by the government at present, the meeting agreed to vote unanimously for the resolution.

Eric Mackintosh then gave an informative talk illustrated with slides on the organisation and work of the Sussex Air Ambulance.

Some of the photos showed the horrific accidents and difficult situations in which the helicopters work. Members learned of the treatment given by doctors and highly trained paramedics at the scene, and the rapid transfer to an appropriate hospital unit.

The services of Kent and Sussex co-operate with one another and with the Police Helicopter in major incidents and are totally dependent on voluntary funding. Mr Mackintosh was thanked by Monica Cranston.
