THE unsung heroes of Eastbourne’s streets were honoured at the annual street cleaners awards evening recently.

Street cleaners, refuse collectors and recycling teams were treated to a fish and chip supper supplied by the Odyssey restaurant and presented with awards at a special ceremony for SITA staff.

The event, now in its fourth year, was hosted at Suncoast Church and arranged by Churches Together for Eastbourne.

Mayor of Eastbourne Cllr Carolyn Heaps paid tribute to the contribution the staff.

Martyn Relf, chair of Churches Together for Eastbourne, referred to the outstanding approval ratings of Eastbourne residents of the work of SITA staff – ratings which improve every year.

Mr Relf said, “Caring for God’s wonderful world was right at the heart of the work.

“I would like to thank the team from Suncoast Church for their hard work in making the evening a success.”
