Former Eastbourne Town player Matt Townshend is running the London Marathon this weekend to raise money for children with arthritis.
Matt, 44, of Kings Avenue, said, “This is the first year the Children’s Arthritis Trust has been allocated a place in the London Marathon and I am therefore both privileged and honoured to run for such a tremendous cause, but more importantly, in the memory of James Herson, whose family members run the voluntary charity which does so much to help other children that suffer from juvenile idiopathic arthritis.”
“For people who know me as a slightly overweight 44-year-old ex-highly tuned athlete, this whole adventure will be a real challenge but the memory of James and the benefit that I can bring to the trust’s work will be all the inspiration I need to help me complete my first marathon.”
Matt has also organised a charity casino night in The Loft in Eastbourne on Sunday May 10 and Matt is hoping old friends from the football and social scene will go along and support him.
