Man put behind bars for series of attacks

A six month jail sentence and a restraining order has been handed down to an Eastbourne man who attacked his ex-girlfriend.

Ryan Skinner saw red following arguments with Kayleigh Dean over starting a family.

Eastbourne magistrates heard the pair had got together in February but things turned sour months later.

The assaults were of a similar nature and Skinner would smother her mouth and nose so she couldn’t breathe.

‘On one occasion he pulled her hair and squeezed her, causing a nose bleed. The court was told that a friend of the victim who tried to intervene was also assaulted.

During one incident the 27-year-old, of Langney Road, turned up at her home after being invited over by Ms Dean but arrived late. She rang her cousin to come over and following an argument he scratched her relative’s car, leaving foot long scratches.

Skinner pleaded guilty to five counts of assault by beating. He had previously admitted another case of assault by beating, criminal damage and failing to turn up to court. Five of the attacks were on Ms Dean and one on her friend. Dan Harrison, defending, said the criminal damage and one of the assaults was on a basis of plea.

He added his client had contacted him when he missed a court hearing but a doctor’s note for sickness didn’t cover the date in question. He said his client had been upset with Ms Dean, adding, “The assault on the friend consists of bruising to her ankle.

“These incidents arise from a long protracted break-up. He’s never been involved in a domestic incident before, nothing towards women. He’s in another relationship now.”

Skinner was given one months jail for each of the assaults to run consecutively and one month for the other two offences to run concurrently.

He was also given a two year restraining order and must not contact Kayleigh Dean during this time.
