A man has been jailed for five years after he burgled the home of a 88-year-old woman in Hailsham last year.
Fred King Senior, 51, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to a burglary in Oldfield Crescent on 15 August. He appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday (17 January) for sentencing.
The court heard how he located the victim in Hailsham town centre after she visited the post office and withdrew £600 cash.
The victim took a taxi home but the suspect made enquiries about her, tracked her down, found her address and then went to her house. He distracted her and took £720 cash and a pension card.
After the case Inspector Tony Wakefield said, “This burglary was a pre-planned heartless attack on a 88-year-old woman who lives on her own. She was ruthlessly selected by King because of her vulnerability.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence and sends out a clear message ‘If you commit this type of crime we will pursue you and bring you to justice’.”
