A young girl from Eastbourne made a very special trip to 11 Downing Street last week as she was invited to Starlight’s magical festive party hosted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Maisie Smith was one of 45 seriously or terminally ill children who attended the event on Wednesday, December 10.
The annual event is organised by Rt Hon George Osborne MP with the help of the Starlight Children’s Foundation to bring some festive cheer to seriously ill children.
Maisie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia back in 2011. Despite having some significant challenges to deal with during her 27 months of chemotherapy, she has displayed an amazing level of maturity and bravery.
As well as granting wishes, Starlight provides entertainment for poorly children in hospitals and hospices and for those undergoing treatment at home.
This was the fourth year Rt Hon George Osborne MP hosted the party, which this year was based on the popular children’s film Frozen.
The children played some festive games and arts and crafts, while Father Christmas was on hand to give each guest a present before they tucked into a delicious tea.
The party was opened by Pixie Lott and there were also lots of special guests, including, Starlight Ambassador Geri Halliwell, members from McBusted, Ella Eyre, XFactor contestant Lauren Platt, children’s comic double act Rich and Dom and Cbeebies presenters Stefan Gates and Katie Thistleton.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, said, “The Starlight Children’s Christmas Party is a highlight in our calendar and one that I look forward to every year. I am so pleased that we can host the party and brighten the lives of some very poorly children and their families.
It has been wonderful for me to be able to spend time with some of these remarkable children.”
