A seven-year-old girl had a lucky escape from a Hailsham flat after a fire was deliberately started in the middle of the night on Wednesday (June 8).

She was in the Diplocks property with a 27-year-old woman and pets, including two dogs, two cats and some rabbits.

The blaze broke out just after 2am, but was out by the time East Sussex Fire and Rescue and police arrived.

Luckily, no-one was hurt and there was no damage to the flat.

Detective Constable Paul Gray said, “This happened in a densely populated residential area and it is fortunate that no one was seriously hurt.

“I would ask anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to either email 101@sussex.pnn.police.ukor call 101 quoting reference 101 of 08/06.”

Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).
