Long-awaited repair and maintenance to Pevensey Castle has been agreed by English Heritage and welcomed by local councillors and the MP.

Pevensey MP Greg Barker, joined local district and parish councillors at Pevensey Castle last Friday (July 26) to welcome the news. It comes after new government funding for English Heritage.

Greg, along with the Councillors Bill Tooley, Lin Clark and Dianne Dear, has been pressing English Heritage to commit to essential maintenance and repairs of the castle for nearly two years.

Last week Baroness Andrews, chair of English Heritage, wrote to Greg to confirm that Pevensey Castle will be included in the new programme thanks to a one-off £80 million Government grant to English Heritage.

Mr Barker said, “I am really encouraged by the news from the Chair of English Heritage that Pevensey Castle will now receive the care and attention it needs.

“This castle is of huge significance to our national heritage. I know that Pevensey and Westham Parish Councillors, along with our local Wealden District Councillors and I have long been pressing English Heritage to carry our essential maintenance and preservation work to the castle and consider ways of boosting visitor numbers to this beautiful corner of East Sussex.”

English Heritage will also discuss working with the community with parish councillor.
