Members of Seaford’s twinning group enjoyed generous German hospitality during their visit to both Bonningstedt and Crivitz.
Seaford had been twinned with Bönningstedt for 30 years and the friendship has gone from strength to strength.
The ‘birthday’ was celebrated with an informal event in Seaford in June with town mayor, Mark Brown as guest of honour.
So in July a party of 16 Seafordians and 20 members of the Seaford Silver Band visited Bönningstedt to mark the occasion. In Bönningstedt the band played at a beer festival, a Mayoral reception, a Battle of the Bands with the Hasloh Fire Brigade Band and at a church service. Mark Brown wore his chain of office, a great talking point, when meeting three German mayors.
He explained,“We presented an iced birthday cake decorated with the flags of both towns. It was made specially for us by Dawn Thompson from the Seaford Food Bank and it was really appreciated.”
He said Bönningstedt (just north of Hamburg) is in the county of Pinneberg, twinned with East Sussex and in the region of Schleswig Holstein. Other towns including Uckfield, Polegate and Hurst Green have twins from that county. The County President attended two of the events.
Other events in Bönningstedt included singing from the ‘Pop-Chor’ which has sung in Seaford in three concerts at the Martello Tower and Seaford Head School. There was a tour of the Newhafen developments in Hamburg Harbour, and a concert from an orchestra made up of 100 vintage domestic appliances.
Some members of the Twinning Association travelled 200km east for a day or more in their second twin town, Crivitz, a pretty country town in Mecklenburg linked to Bönningstedt and in the former East Germany. Here they enjoyed two civic receptions, a tour of the lake and castle grounds in nearby Schwerin, and time with host families.
There were few language problems for Mr Brown. He said he spent 14 years in Germany during his service career, adding, “Although my grammar might not be so good I can make myself understood.”
