More than 7,000 leaflets detailing Eastbourne events to commemorate the outbreak of World War One have been distributed.

This year Eastbourne plays host to a series of special events and commemorations in remembrance of the 1,056 local servicemen and women who fell in the conflict and others who fought for their country.

Many of the events take place at the Redoubt Fortress and include exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, cultural evenings and a choral spectacular.

There will also be themed floral displays at the Carpet Gardens and a BBC History roadshow during Airbourne reflecting on the dramatic impact the war had on Sussex families.

The town’s 1914 - 2014 Commemorations Committee has been instrumental in organising the events and is urging people to pick up a leaflet for full details.

Stephen Lloyd MP, who is chair of the committee, said, “I would like to thank all the members of the committee who have put in so much work to ensure Eastbourne has a real depth and breadth of events to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Great War.

“Input from the combined services body, the Military Roots organisation and the RBL has been particularly helpful. It is important we remember what happened all those years ago and the impact these cataclysmic events had on our town and our nation.

“I would encourage local residents to pick up a copy of the commemorative leaflet from the Council, the Tourist Information Centre and other venues across Eastbourne as well as reading about them in the Herald. Our council has been particularly supportive to the committee and we are all grateful for their funding of this excellent information leaflet.”

The leaflets are available at the Tourist Information Centre, Town Hall, Redoubt Fortress, Pavilion Exhibition, library and other venues around town. See page 86.
