The Students’ Union is celebrating after success in its campaign to extend Southern Rail’s Unizone ticket out to Eastbourne and Worthing.

From May, thousands of University of Brighton students based outside of the current boundaries will be able to benefit from train travel at a special discounted rate.

With a valid NUS extra card, the Unizone season ticket offers students unlimited train travel in their area.

Previously boundaries were set at Lancing and Falmer, meaning that many UoB students were excluded from the discounts, simply because of where they studied.

The University of Brighton has sites located in Brighton, Hastings and Eastbourne, as well as a number of students who live in the local area and commute in.

The successful campaign was led by vice president of campus and communications Paul Cooke with activities including the lobbying of local MPs and a petition which attracted hundreds of signatures from UoB staff and students.

Students say their reasons for signing was that they felt travel is too expensive, they are on a limited income and they wanted to be included in the whole uni area.

“I am delighted that we have achieved this success for so many of our students. Studying at a university spread across so many sites and three different towns and cities means that our students often have to travel.

“This is expensive for everyone but as their income is so limited, it really hits our students hard in the pocket.

“I am determined that the fight will continue until all University of Brighton students, including those based at Hastings, are no longer excluded from affordable train travel.”

Brighton Students’ Union is a registered charity aimed at improving student experience at the University of Brighton.
