Willingdon councillor Stephen Shing has played an important role in London’s Chinatown elections.
The London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) is one of the largest Chinese Associations in the UK. Every year it holds one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside of China, in Trafalgar Square, and an estimated five hundred thousand people attend the event annually.
The LCCA had its election for board members on the August 5. Cllr Shing was invited to be returning officer, alongside a representative from the Chinese Embassy.
Cllr Shing said, “I am delighted to have had the opportunity to be the board committee election returning officer again. It was a true honour, as was overseeing that the committee election went smoothly. Mr Chu Ting Tang OBE was re-elected as the Chairman of London Chinatown Chinese Association. Mr Tang and his team worked very hard to raise £500,00 last year to use on the New Year celebrations at Trafalgar Square.
“About £50,000 was left over, which is very encouraging as other Associations sometimes run events at a loss.
“It is also great to see a large number of newly elected young members. I have no doubt that their skills and energy will go a long way to helping to promote London Chinatown even further.”
