An Eastbourne stalwart who served the town as chairman of Eastbourne County Healthcare NHS Trust, chairman of EAVS , president of Eastbourne Rotary Club and an active member of Eastbourne Rotary AM over the years has died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76.
Geoffrey Williams was born in St Leonards, the youngest of three brothers – Robert and David are his older siblings – who all attended Eastbourne College, as did his three children and grandson.
He met his wife Marianne in 1960 and the couple married in Sweden in 1965. Marianne, who was also a leading light in Eastbourne Rotary AM, sadly passed away in November.
Geoffrey began a career in insurance and was a well-respected Fellow of the Chartered Insurers Institute, becoming managing director of Ansvar Insurance Company which relocated from Wembley to Eastbourne during the 1970s.
He was a leading force in the high profile anti drink-driving campaign during the 80s and 90s and a president of several large organisations including the IAMA (International Abstaining Motorists Association).
Another organisation he was president of, BAFM (the British Association of Friends of Art Galleries and Museums). reflected his passion for the arts.
He was president of the Towner Art Gallery and made honorary lifetime vice-president for services to the Towner.
He also had a great passion for jazz and organised many concerts for charity with big names in the jazz world as well as playing clarinet for a local band.
Geoffrey, who loved spending time with his family, leaves his two daughters, Katherine and Ingela, son Anthony, and his four grandchildren Kendal, Finlay, Kari and Millie.
The funeral is on July 17 at 1.30pm at St Mary’s Parish Church, Old Town.
