Sussex Downs College celebrate A-Level results day SUS-140814-130326001

There were tears of joy on Thursday morning as students in Eastbourne celebrated some of the town’s best ever A-Level results.

Sixth Form pupils at Bede’s achieved record results with 72 per cent graded at A*-B and almost half of all grades at A*-A. Success was particularly noticed in languages, sciences and the humanities, where 91 per cent of all grades were A*-C, and in the art and English departments, where 97 per cent and 85 per cent of pupils achieved A*-B grades respectively.

Headmaster Dr Richard Maloney said, “What is so delightful about this year’s record-breaking results is that they are a product of an extraordinary level of combined effort from our sixth formers, their teachers and Bede’s hugely supportive parental body. They go to show that our unique combination of academic rigour and holistic education really does deliver excellent results.”

At Eastbourne College, girls and boys were celebrating an equally outstanding crop of results, with 78 per cent of all grades A*, A or B and more than 49 per cent of grades awarded A* or A.

Headmaster Simon Davies said, “Ahead of these results, there was plenty of press coverage that suggested grades nationally would be depressed and schools would be disappointed. At Eastbourne College, the very opposite is true. Yet again, headline figures are superb and, more importantly, the great majority of individuals have met or exceeded their ambitious targets. Our boys and girls have worked extremely hard. The outcome is an excellent set of grades and we are thrilled for them.”

Students at Moira House Girls School produced exceptional A-Level results, with an overall pass rate of 99.2 per cent. An impressive 65.4 per cent of the girls achieved A*-B grades and 85 per cent scoring A*-C.

Principal James Sheridan said, “Yet again, our girls have produced outstanding results. The added value in these results continues to be a source of pride for us and it is wonderful to see so many of the girls successfully achieving the placement of their choice at university.”

Celebrations went off with a bang at Sussex Downs as sky-high grades were achieved by the majority of the school’s students. The college achieved an overall A-Level pass rate of 97 per cent, with almost three quarters of students achieving grades of A-C. An impressive 55 subject areas achieved 100 per cent pass rates.

Melanie Hunt, principal and chief executive, said, “I warmly congratulate all of our students and wish them well for their future career plans. Some of them have demonstrated remarkable achievements and are recognised as among the best in the country.

“I feel so proud of our students. It’s an absolute privilege to have this job and I’m so delighted for our teachers as well. Ofsted said how dedicated and committed our teachers and our support staff are and this just shows it.”
