Burglars broke into Eastbourne Rugby Club’s Park Avenue HQ on Friday night and stole the club till.

A quantity of cash was stolen, as well as bottles of Magners cider.

Steve Snell, director of the rugby club, said, “It was the night of our AGM and we found out early on the Saturday morning.

“We think they were opportunist thieves – they broke in through the main door and then damaged internal doors.

“They were obviously trying to get into the bar area.

“We don’t know how much was taken yet although there is always a cash float in the till.

“We’ve circulated details of the break-in to members via our Facebook site in the hope someone might have seen or heard something.”

Mr Snell said the main door has already been repaired but internal doors will be replaced as part of a comprehensive refurbishment scheme taking place early this year.

He explained, “There was minimal damage from where they broke in and we have already made the external door secure.

“We shall be tightening security and we believe that access is now impossible.”

He described how police were called and combed the area to see if the till had been dumped but they were unable to find anything.

Eastbourne Rugby Club is a popular and well-attended club with teams for youngsters in every year group ranging from under six to under 16.

There are also colts sides (13s to 16s) and adult teams - the first, second and third XV and veterans.

Anyone with information about the burglary should contact Eastbourne Police on 101 or email 101@sussexpnn.police.uk.
