Hundreds of homes and businesses were left without power after an electricity sub-station exploded on Friday evening.
Streets around Bridgemere Road were closed off until the sub-station, close to the junction with Churchdale Road and by the stream that runs through the area, was made safe and engineers worked throughout the night to restore power.
The building was completely destroyed. Nobody was injured and no residents had to be evacuated.
Susssex Police said they received a call at around 6pm from a concerned resident who said she had heard a loud explosion in the area and emergency services were called to the scene.
A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said, “Power was interrupted to 483 customers in the Churchdale Road area of Eastbourne at 6pm on Friday after a fault at an electricity substation. Engineers rerouted power to the majority of customers in stages by midnight and the final supplies were restored by 4pm on Saturday. We understand how difficult it is being without electricity and apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused. Our engineers worked hard to reconnect all supplies.”
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said, “Firefighters from Eastbourne attended, a small building had been badly affected but there were no reports of injuries or a fire. Crews remained on scene to ensure public safety along with police while UK Power officials assessed the damage.”
